A new, curvier me

in Bits & Pieces

A couple of months ago a Curves gym opened up in our town.  If you’re not familiar with Curves, it’s one of those women’s only, 30 minute workout places.

I have never liked gyms.  I held a membership once for a month and went about 3 times.  Too many sweaty blokes and beautiful people looking at themselves for my liking.  If the truth be told, I’m not all that fond of exercising full stop.  Unless it’s actually part of my day, like walking the kids to school, it’s not going to last too long.

Yoga is one thing I’ve been able to stick at for a little while now.  (A little aside:  My yoga teacher who I guess is in her late 50′s did the splits yesterday.  I can’t get my legs to go past a 90 degree angle.  The woman is a freak!)

The 30 minute thing at Curves appealed to me though.  I’ve been thinking that I need to improve my strength and fitness lest CML rears its ugly head.  Then a few of my friends joined and raved about it.

So I decided to pop in and have a very non-commital look.  The place and workout actually appealed to me. Three circuits, 30 seconds per station, no weights to jam my fingers in.

I’ve been going for about six weeks and am surprised and pleased to say I’m still enjoying it.  The 30 minutes goes in no time and it’s not so long that it’s too hard to fit in.  I could go on and on about it.  No mirrors to see how dorky I look.  Ladies of all shapes and sizes.  It’s great!

I’ve really noticed some changes happening.  I have biceps!  Who would have thought!  I can now also vacuum and mop the whole house and not need a cup of tea and sit down when I’m done.  Focus and concentration have graced me with their presence once again. And I’ve lost 11cm from my total body measurements.

The moral of the story?  Don’t be discouraged if you hate the exercise you’re doing (or not doing).  Keep trying different things until you find something that clicks with you.  It’ll be worth it.
