Over the weekend we were fortunate to have a kid free day. We took full advantage and headed off to the local Jayco dealer to finally order our new caravan – an Expanda.
We chose the Expanda because of its versatility. We essentially get a 24′ caravan that tows as a 16′ one, because of the way the beds fold up. When it’s fully opened up it’s very spacious, which is important with three kids and their friends hanging around.
Fairly early on in the process we’d decided what layout we wanted. To fit five of us without having to make up beds each day, we thought a bunk model would be the best option. The disadvantage of the extra sleeping space was quite a bit less storage.
Just as we were about to sign on the dotted line, the salesman mentioned an alternative sleeping arrangement in a different model. Poof (as in puff of smoke, not the salesman
). Our months of planning were thrown out the window.
We ended up choosing storage over beds, but we’re confident the new arrangment will work well. After having limited storage space in our current van, it’ll be a luxury having all those extra cupboards. I’ll be able to get the toaster out without everything else falling in a pile on the floor.
Fervent holiday planning is starting as we look at destinations further afield than we’ve ventured before. At this stage we’ve got the NSW north and south coasts, eastern Victoria, south east Queensland and, of course, the dream trip right around Australia.
We’ve got about three months of planning time before the Expanda arrives, but that’s half the fun.
Where are your favourite holiday places?

Thank you for the welcome, Lightening
Exciting alright! It’s going to be a long three months. We ended up ordering the 16.49-1 instead of the bunk version. The salesguy pointed out that the lounge was as big as the bunk to sleep on (we only need one extra bed, not two). We’ll only need to throw the sleeping bag and pillow up on one of the beds when we want the seat back. The storage gain will be well worth it.
You know I never thought I’d say this… but I think I have caravan envy… though I still keen on the camper trailers instead!

I’ve seen some pretty swish camper trailers about too. With annexes and bits added some are just huge. I don’t like the idea of all the packing involved though. I’d rather put it in once and be done with it
