My new hobby

After much gentle, yet persistent hinting from me The Thinker bought me a new camera for my birthday earlier this year.  I’d been wanting to upgrade to a DSLR for over a year.  As we were (and still are) on a bit of a savings kick, I had decided to stick with my point and shoot and rather practice on what I could control with it.

Now though, I have my shiny new Nikon D40.  Not what I had my eye on (that was a much more expensive, later model) but exciting nonetheless.

Since January, I’ve been slowly learning the different functions and can now quite confidently take passable photos in full manual mode.  I’m no expert by any stretch and usually forget to make one adjustment.  Thank goodness for the LCD screen!  Fortunately it’s mostly things that I can correct once I’ve downloaded the photos.

I’m actually amazed at what I have learnt to do in the last couple of months.  I was absolutely terrified of switching that little dial to “M” (manual) initially.  However, once I took the plunge I found it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I had imagined.  And with practice I’m sure I’ll remember all the settings I should be checking in no time!

I guess that’s the case with so many new things we could do.  The picture we create in our mind of the unknown is so often much more difficult/scary/negative than the reality.

I’m really enjoying getting out with the camera and am slowly overcoming that feeling of being a complete dork for carrying it around with me everywhere.  It encourages me to explore more, as my wanderings now have some purpose.  What’s more, the kids love coming along and taking their own snaps with my old point and shoot.  It’s a lovely way to spend time with them and to get to know our environment a little better.

In the interests of keeping myself clicking away I’m going to post some (or one) of my pictures each week with a little background to go with it – probably on the weekend.  I’ve also included a link to my Flickr stream below (click on the picture).

If you use a photo sharing site, feel free to leave a link in the comments.  I’d love to see it :-)

You’re one step ahead of me. I dearly want a DSLR and am trying out my sister’s Canon 350D. I have its photos and others I’ve taken with my Panasonic camera plastered throughout my blog. There’s also links to Flickr on my blog if you’re interested.

Love the sunset photo by the way.

Took me a while to get the courage up to switch from auto, but once you start experimenting it’s really fun. The best thing about digital cameras is you can take a bazillion shots and it doesn’t cost a cent. I still use auto sometimes when I want to be absolutely sure I get a good shot – like the kids blowing out their birthday candles or something. Give it a go!
