Getting things done at home - Summary

After a few days of chewing over the Getting Things Done (GTD) system I thought it might be useful to do a quick summary of the steps involved.

  1. Collect

Get everything out of your head, gather all the little bits around the house and in the car and get them into your in tray.

  2. Empty the in tray

One piece of paper at a time, go through your in tray and decide whether it should be trashed, filed or actioned. Remember, if the action will take less than 2 minutes, do it then and there.

  3. Organising and doing

Organise the items to be actioned into contexts, so you can easily pick something to do where ever you are.

  4. Review

Carry out regular reviews. Pat yourself on the back for what you have achieved and check that you are on the right track.

If you’re going to give GTD a go, remember to tweak it to suit your sytle, situations and needs. There’s no point trying to work to a system that doesn’t fit the way you do things. I figure it’s much easier to change a system to suit rather than trying to change yourself.
