Getting things done at home - Reviewing

Here we are at the last stage of the Getting Things Done (GTD) system. For me, this is the engine room of the system. And, unfortunately, a part I often fail to do. Reviewing the system allows you to feel good about what you’ve achieved, see where you are heading and perhaps give you a little shove when it’s needed. This is where you can catch the things that have been pushed aside in your busy day.

Reviewing is a constant. It needs to be done regularly or things will begin to fall apart (I know!). I find that to keep going full steam ahead I need to review daily, weekly and monthly.

The Daily Review

Each day I check my calendar for appointments or important dates. My calendar is my framework on which I build my day. Once I know the basics for my day, I can add in the next actions that I’d like to achieve that day.

I also add to my in tray on a daily basis. I don’t usually do the things I’ve added until I process them later, unless they’re urgent.

The Weekly Review

My weekly review begins with a review of what I have achieved. I get to tick of what I’ve achieved during the week. Yay! This part also highlights items that have passed their due or action dates. Then, the whole process starts again. I do another collection sweep of the house and my mind and process the in tray again.

The Monthly Review

I try to look at the big picture each month. This is my grand plan overview. What are my goals? Is the stuff I’m doing getting me any closer to them? How can I change things?

So…how am I going to make sure I do my reviews and keep on keeping on? Well, I’m going to do a monthly blog post about how I’m going. That increases my accountability. Other than that I’m open to suggestions. What do you think I can do to maintain GTD momentum?
